About Chairs on Parade

From April 6 to September 9, 2001, the Hickory Museum of Art  sponsored the largest exhibition of artistic chairs ever seen in the United States. "Chairs on Parade" was seen by local residents, tourists and media representatives as they followed this unique project across the city.

"Chairs on Parade" emulated public art projects in several major US. cities, each of which featured over- sized animals or inanimate objects decorated by local artists and displayed throughout the city. Larger-than- life furniture was the natural choice for Hickory.

Hundreds of local artists and craftspeople submitted design proposals for the project. 50 were selected to present their designs.
